Analytical Philosophy

Philosophical Foundations of Education

Analytical philosophy focuses on the act of analysis, which requires logical precision, clarity, and rigor to properly carry out analysis of ideas and arguments.

Analytical philosophy covers the following dimensions of philosophies

  • Logic – analytical philosophy uses logic as its main method.
  • Epistemology  – analysis of concepts such as “knowledge,” “justification,” etc.
  • Metaphysics – not as strong as the previous ones, but metaphysics is involved through contemporary analytic metaphysics

The educational philosophies that analytical philosophy overlaps with are

  • Realism – shares the analytic concern for an objective, knowable world described in clear, logical terms.
  • Pragmatism – overlaps where analytic inquiry stresses practical clarification of ideas and language-in-use (e.g., later Wittgenstein, logical empiricists’ verificationism).
